Luna is an architectural wall sconce that explores the intersection of geometric minimalism, light refraction, and spatial ambiance. Inspired by the phased transition of the moon, it evolves from a subtle daytime wall sculpture into a floating half-moon of soft light using precision optical edge-lighting to turn transparency into form.
Deep-Dive: Edge-Lighting & Optical Physics of Luna
At the core of Luna lies custom-engineered Light Guide Panel (LGP) technology, utilizing high-grade optical PMMA (acrylic).
1. Total Internal Reflection (TIR): High-density, high-CRI LED strips are concealed within the ridged central aluminum housing. When turned on, these LEDs project light laterally directly into the polished edge of the acrylic disc. Thanks to the physics of Total Internal Reflection, the light travels trapped inside the clear acrylic without spilling out, keeping the disc visually transparent from the side profile.
2. Laser-Etched Micro-Prisms (Light Scattering): To extract light uniformly across the active semi-circle, the rear surface of the acrylic features a precision-calculated array of laser-etched micro-dots or linear grooves. As the internally reflected light strikes these micro-distortions, the angle of reflection changes, breaking TIR and forcing the light to scatter forward evenly.
3. Day-to-Night Transformation:
Unlit State: The acrylic half remains fully transparent, allowing the wall texture and architectural context to pass through seamlessly.
Lit State: The laser-etched grid captures the side-projected light, converting transparency into a rich, glare-free, floating half-moon of warm ambient illumination.
